A dual function building to provide a new rehearsal and education facility as part of the Chichester Festival Theatre complex. Construction was preceded by the demolition of the old “Gunter” rehearsal rooms on the same site.
An interesting design criteria was to let the building into the ground both to minimise external height to comply with planning conditions whilst maximising internal height for rehearsal space.
The design incorporated a glulam timber frame together with the use of timber panel construction to build and finish wall surfaces. Topped off with a zinc roof covering and under floor heating below timber floors in all areas.
Particular attention had to be paid to the acoustics design and construction to meet a stringent specification to be fit for purpose.
