Project Description
QS for Principle Contractor

Recipient of the RIBA Downland Prize September 2009. A sensitive extension and refurbishment of this Grade 2 Listed church in the village of Angmering, West Sussex. Prior to commencement of the new works, the pews were removed and the old wooden church floor was completely taken up.

The main element of the project was to build two new extensions to either side of the entrance to match the existing stone church. This was to provide a new meeting room and office to the Northern side and a new entrance to the Gratwicke Chapel on the Southern side.

Also included in the works were a full immersion baptistry, a new raised floor with underfloor heating to the entire church, new M&E improvements with audio visual systems and timber treatments where necessary. The whole installation to be fully DDA compliant.

There were a few surprises that the client and combined team had to deal with during the works including the unearthing of a child’s coffins under the old floor, and the discovery of an unknown tunnel and crypt.
